Molecular Epidemiology & Infectious Diseases

The division of Molecular and Bacterial Epidemiology and Infectiology investigates the molecular properties of emerging pathogens in veterinary medicine.

Antibiotic resistance mechanisms and the dissemination of these genes are among the most important priorities of the division.

The division of Molecular and Bacterial Epidemiology and Infectiology is therefore also an important link between the diagnostic division of ZOBA, the division of research and teaching and the various clinics of the Vetsuisse faculty.

Other important areas of activity of the division of molecular epidemiology and infectious diseases are:

  • Surveillance of nosocomial infections in the various clinics
  • Development and application of molecular methods for the investigation and surveillance of antibiotic resistance in bacteria causing infectious disease in animals as well in zoonotic bacterial pathogens.
  • Investigation of potential reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria from farm animals and pets.
